Borders and Migration
REPORT
Please answer ONE question. Your answer should not be more
than 3000 words long and should be typed. Candidates are advised to
avoid overlap in answers to questions. You are reminded that you
may not present substantially the same material in the same sort of
way, in any two pieces of work (either assessed work or coursework
essays). For instance, you may not repeat substantially the same
material in a formal assessment if it has already formed part of an
essay submitted for assessment or coursework. This does not prevent
you referring to the same texts, examples or case studies as
appropriate.
Answer ONE question using module readings and at least two
ethnographic examples:
- A theoretical and historical engagement with the concept of diaspora allows us to contextualize contemporary migration policy and popular discourse.
- How can we unsettle the idea of the border in ways which allow us to think about migration differently?
- How have anthropologists engaged with the experience of waiting to discuss migration?
- Pick one example of an experimental method anthropologists have used to research and represent migration. Critically assess a specific output that has resulted from this experimentation by thinking through what sorts of audiences it might reach and what sorts of impact it might have.
- How does an attention to the city as a site for in-migration allow us to understand the challenges and possibilities that migrants face?
- Borders are always gendered.
- Imagination is at the heart of any migratory movement.
- “Border stories reveal the interaction between agency and structure in the migratory experience.” (Khosravi 2010:3).
